Women in surface technology: challenges, opportunities and prospects

The Female SurFaces, the women's network of the ZVO, invite you to a three-part, dialogue-oriented session on the topic of women and surface technology with a focus on production as part of the ZVO Surface Days 2025 on the afternoon of 25 September. There will be further opportunities to make contacts and exchange ideas at the Female SurFaces stand (no. 17) in the accompanying industrial exhibition. Here, interested parties can also find out more about the products of Female SurFaces, which has now been registered as a brand, for example the mentoring programme that will be launched at #OTBerlin25.

Die Female SurFaces richten auf den #OTBerlin25 wieder eine Session aus.

The session will kick off with a presentation on the development of women and the changes in the world of work, with a special focus on surface technology. A hundred years ago, women were still excluded from many areas of the economy, but today they are indispensable in many industries. And yet a great deal of potential remains untapped: While the shortage of skilled labour is growing, the proportion of women in technical and manufacturing professions remains low. The presentation shows the challenges, but also the strategic opportunities that arise for companies that see the shortage of skilled labour not as a problem, but as an opportunity and focus on the previously untapped potential of women.

This is followed by a dialogue between two industry experts on the topic of women in production at an electroplating company: a female employee and a female employer talk openly about their experiences: What challenges do both sides face? What hurdles are there on both sides - from childcare and physical demands to dealing with chemicals? And what does it take to give more women not only access but also long-term prospects in production?

The session will conclude with a panel discussion that will revisit the topic of (more) women in manufacturing jobs. Using figures, data and facts as a starting point, the current situation will be analysed and ways forward will be discussed. An exciting discussion with experts from business, science and practice - moderated with the aim of developing concrete solutions and new perspectives.
